2025 NHL Awards: Lane Hutson Wins Calder, Barkov Repeats as Selke Winner

With the Stanley Cup Final currently underway, the National Hockey League continues its announcements of various league award recipients leading up to the main NHL Awards ceremony later this month.

Most recently, the NHL revealed that Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has been awarded the Calder Trophy, presented to the league`s top rookie. Hutson garnered an impressive 165 out of 191 first-place votes, finishing ahead of the other two finalists: Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini.

Hutson makes history as only the fourth defenseman in the modern era of the NHL (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in scoring, achieving 66 points. The exclusive list includes legends like Bobby Orr (41 points), Brian Leetch (71 points), and Quinn Hughes (53 points). Furthermore, his 60 assists match the record set by Larry Murphy (Kings, 1980-81) for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history. His Calder victory also marks him as the third Canadiens player to win the award in the expansion era (since 1967-68), following Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).

The league also recently announced Aleksander Barkov as the winner of the Selke Trophy for the second consecutive season. He was chosen over fellow Florida-based finalists Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart, recognized for another exceptional performance at both ends of the ice. The Panthers captain played a key role in his team ranking seventh in the NHL for goals-against per game (2.72) and tenth in penalty-killing efficiency (80.7%).

The winners for the remaining awards will be revealed at the 2025 NHL Awards ceremony, which is scheduled for June 12th, taking place before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Selke Trophy

Awarded to the forward deemed to be the most outstanding in defensive play.

  • Winner: Aleksander Barkov (Florida Panthers)
  • Finalist: Anthony Cirelli (Tampa Bay Lightning)
  • Finalist: Sam Reinhart (Florida Panthers)

This is Barkov`s second consecutive Selke win and third overall. He was once again a dominant force and a strong favorite for the award, posting a plus-13 goal differential at five-on-five while consistently handling the toughest matchups and contributing 71 points offensively. Barkov`s reign as a premier defensive forward shows no signs of slowing down.

Calder Trophy

Presented to the player judged to be the most proficient in their first NHL season.

  • Winner: Lane Hutson (Montreal Canadiens)

Lane Hutson might have been considered a dark horse candidate for the Calder, especially with the highly anticipated arrivals of prospects like Macklin Celebrini and Matvei Michkov this season. However, Hutson thrived, leading all rookies with 66 points (six goals, 60 assists). This made him the fourth defenseman in the NHL`s modern era (since 1943-44) to achieve this feat. Hutson quickly established himself as a top defender for Montreal and is a vital cornerstone for a young team that reached the Stanley Cup playoffs this season.

Over his two seasons, Carbery has amassed a record of 91-53-20 and successfully guided the Capitals to the postseason in both campaigns.
