Day 8
The American Cup features a unique double-elimination format with two brackets, each consisting of eight elite chess players. These players compete in a knockout style tournament. The double-elimination system provides a second chance for any player who loses a match to still compete for the top position.
Participants engage in matches that begin with two classical games. In case of a tie, rapid tiebreaks are used to determine the winner. Winners of each match in the Championship Bracket advance further, while those who are defeated move to the Elimination Bracket, where they continue playing rapid chess. A loss in the Elimination Bracket results in elimination from the tournament.
- Classical Time Control: Game in 90 minutes with a 30-second increment per move (G/90+30).
- Rapid Time Control: Game in 15 minutes with a 10-second increment per move (G/15+10).
- Playoff Time Control: Game in 3 minutes with a 2-second increment per move (G/3+2).
- Championship Bracket Matches: Each match consists of two classical games.
- Elimination Bracket Matches: Each match consists of four rapid games.
- Playoffs: Players compete in a two-game blitz match. If tied, this process repeats until a winner emerges.
- Match 14 Scenario: If the match between the Championship Bracket winner and the Elimination Bracket winner results in each player losing one match, a 4-game rapid match (Match 15) follows, and playoffs if still necessary.
