The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has announced a provisional 60-day suspension for Grandmaster Christopher Yoo, effective from May 9, 2025. This measure was taken following the submission of a second complaint alleging harassment, which is currently undergoing preliminary review.
The suspension arises from two separate complaints citing violations of the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Code. Case 5/2025 (A) was filed by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), and an additional recent complaint, whose details and complainant remain confidential due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, are both under investigation by the EDC.
It`s noted that on November 14, 2024, the US Chess Federation had already imposed its own sanctions on GM Christopher Yoo. These included a one-year ban from participating in tournaments under the auspices of the USCF, along with a five-year probationary period extending through November 14, 2030.
In accordance with Article 26.12 of the FIDE Charter, which allows for the international extension of national sanctions under certain conditions, the USCF formally requested FIDE to recognize and globally enforce its ban. This request is also currently under investigation by FIDE, pursuant to Article 4.15 of the FIDE Ethics Code.
Considering the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing investigative process, the Chair of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission issued the temporary suspension of GM Yoo to safeguard the integrity of the process. Both GM Yoo and the USCF have been formally notified of this decision. The provisional suspension period of 60 days may be extended if a final resolution is not reached within this initial timeframe.
FIDE stated that this decision aligns with its commitment to protecting everyone involved in chess and aims to send a clear message about the importance of fostering a respectful environment for the entire chess community, regardless of gender, age, or status.
