Malå, a small inland village located approximately 800 km north of Sweden`s capital, Stockholm, is preparing to host the COOP SnowVolley Cup. Taking place at the Tjamstan alpine resort, this event marks a return following last year`s successful debut. Malå IF is organizing the tournament, utilizing four courts. Plans are underway to improve the event arena, aiming for a more functional and welcoming environment for spectators, as the days get longer and the winter weather becomes more pleasant.
The tournament has expanded this year, now featuring three distinct categories: mixed, senior/corporate/youth, and a mixed snow-level division. Around 20 teams from various parts of northern Sweden are expected to compete. The rules have been specially adapted for the tournament format. Notably, the youth snow-level event for children aged 10-12 incorporates elements from the Swedish Volleyball Federation`s seven-level game system. In this version of Snow Volleyball, teams must still touch the ball three times, but players are permitted to catch and throw the ball on their second touch.
The idea for a Snow Volleyball tournament like this was first discussed over four years ago. Although many local enthusiasts showed interest, the plans were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, with Johan Grensell`s leadership last year, the original vision was revitalized. The event has received strong backing from local sponsors, the community, the Swedish Volleyball Federation, Sports federations, and the CEV. Malå IF organizes the tournament not only to promote the sport but also to generate funds for children`s and youth activities and to bring vitality to the community. Numerous individuals and local organizations are involved. The COOP SnowVolley Cup 2024 is made possible by volunteers from Malå IF in partnership with COOP Malå and the Tjamstan alpine resort.
The primary goal for this year`s event is to build upon the success of the 2023 premiere and to contribute to the club`s ongoing development in the coming years.
