The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) Appeal Chamber has delivered its definitive ruling in Case 05/2025(A), confirming and expanding the disciplinary action previously imposed by the United States Chess Federation (USCF) against Grandmaster Christopher Yoo to now be valid worldwide.
Responding to a formal request from the USCF, FIDE has decided that the one-year suspension issued by the USCF, which began on November 15, 2024, and is set to conclude on November 14, 2025, will now be universally enforced. Throughout this period, GM Yoo is prohibited from participating in any events that are officially rated by FIDE.
This decision arises from a disciplinary process initiated following an incident that occurred during the US Chess Championship, where GM Yoo was involved in a physical altercation with a member of the broadcast team. The EDC Appeal Chamber concluded that the USCF`s investigation and the subsequent disciplinary measure were conducted fairly and in accordance with established due process procedures.
Additionally, GM Yoo will be subject to a five-year probationary period, effective until November 14, 2030. Any instance of similar misconduct during this probation could potentially result in further disciplinary actions being taken against him.
