The women`s national volleyball team of Ireland kicked off the Small Countries Association (SCA) Championship with a dramatic five-set triumph (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14) over Iceland. This pulsating victory was followed by a comfortable straight-sets win against Northern Ireland, propelling Ireland to the top of the early standings.

The host nation faced a stern test in their initial match against Iceland, ultimately securing the decisive fifth set 16-14 after battling back from three match points down in a tense tie-break. The atmosphere at the Sport Ireland Campus was electric. Fiona Rigby`s introduction from the bench midway through the fifth set proved pivotal, as her composed and precise serving helped Ireland clinch the victory. Her crucial contributions shifted the momentum just as Iceland seemed poised to win. Captain Emily Frazell demonstrated calm leadership throughout, supported by key plays from opposite hitter Emma Byrne.
For Iceland, the standout performer was the remarkably talented 15-year-old Inga Björg Brynjúlfsdóttir, who delivered a fearless, MVP-level performance that defied her young age.
Coach Mark Delahunty`s strategic decision to deploy Rigby at a critical juncture was highly effective, highlighting the increasing depth within the Irish squad.
Earlier on the same day, both San Marino and Scotland made strong statements with convincing 3-0 victories over Iceland and Northern Ireland respectively.
These impressive results mean that two SCA nations are now positioned among the top 50 teams in the FIVB World Rankings, with Ireland ranked 48th and Scotland 49th.
