UFC superstar Jon Jones has stirred significant excitement among fans by stating that he and Tom Aspinall have reached an agreement regarding their potential fight.
Since November of last year, the two fighters, aged 37 and 32 respectively, have been expected to face off in a major heavyweight title unification match.
However, this anticipated clash has not yet happened, even though the UFC reportedly agreed to Jones` financial demands. For weeks, MMA fans have been kept in suspense as the former pound-for-pound best fighter has openly considered retirement.
Last month, Jones, a UFC Hall of Famer, stated that the organization`s leadership is aware of his intentions and denied that he is delaying Aspinall`s career.
During a recent seminar held in Phuket, Thailand, Jones revealed that he and Aspinall have made an agreement not to share specific details about their potential fight or the future of the heavyweight division before the UFC makes an official announcement.
In a video from the seminar, when asked by a fan, `When are you fighting Tom?` the former long-time light-heavyweight champion responded:
`There`s a lot happening behind the scenes with me, Tom, and the UFC. They are one of the largest sports organizations in the world. Currently, Tom and I have agreed to wait for the UFC to make any announcements, so I`m legally unable to discuss it further.`
Jones` remarks caused a strong reaction among UFC fans, leading to mixed opinions regarding his statement. Fans reacted strongly online, with some expressing excitement that the fight seems closer, while others remained skeptical, suggesting Jones might announce retirement or vacate the belt instead of confirming the fight. Some simply expressed anticipation for the potential matchup.
Jones` latest comments follow closely after a recent interview where he admitted he was still unsure about his future in fighting.
Appearing on `Deepcut with VicBlends,` he stated: `I don`t know what the future holds regarding fighting and competing. I do feel that I will always be involved in martial arts, whether through coaching or participating in exhibition matches and similar activities. There is still plenty of strong competition within the UFC. However, I see myself as more than just a fighter. Given my position, I believe I have more opportunities than many other fighters, including the ability to step away and potentially return. So currently, my focus is on love, happiness, and kindness. We`re at the 25-year mark, and this year promises to be very special.`
Jones has not fought in the octagon since his dominant victory over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November at Madison Square Garden.
Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall has been out of action since his rapid 60-second win against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 last July.
