Montenegro Volleyball Federation Teams Up with Ecology Ministry to Tackle Plastic Waste

In a move that sees sport joining forces with environmental stewardship, the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro (OSCG) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development. This partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing Montenegro`s approach to waste management, focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The core of the agreement centers around implementing a program aimed at raising public awareness and providing information on the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment. It appears that even on the playing field, the impact of plastic pollution is being recognised as a critical issue requiring collective action.

Interestingly, this initiative is supported by a dedicated funding mechanism. A special fee of €0.03 is collected from retailers for each lightweight plastic carry bag (specifically those with a wall thickness exceeding 50 microns). The revenue generated from this fee is channeled directly into the nation`s Environmental Protection Fund, ensuring resources are available for such vital environmental programs.

Minister Damjan Ćulafić commented on the signing, emphasising that this memorandum reinforces their commitment to building an efficient and sustainable waste management system while simultaneously boosting public understanding of the dangers posed by plastic bags. He underscored the importance of cooperating with diverse groups, including sports federations, local communities, businesses, and international partners, in laying the groundwork for an environmentally conscious future for Montenegro. It`s a clear signal that tackling environmental challenges requires a broad, inclusive “team” approach.

The memorandum outlines several areas of mutual cooperation. These include the exchange of information, advice, and support for developing strategic environmental planning documents, contributing to studies, reports, and programs, and collaborating on project implementation. Regular meetings will also be held to share experiences and new knowledge.

Further joint efforts will involve designing and executing media campaigns, organizing educational events such as seminars, public debates, round tables, and conferences specifically focused on waste management solutions. The agreement also covers the planning and execution of mutually beneficial projects and fostering the development of joint ideas aimed at strengthening cooperation in creating an efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly waste management system across Montenegro.

This partnership between the Montenegrin Volleyball Federation and the Ministry of Ecology serves as a compelling example of how different sectors can collaborate for the greater environmental good. By leveraging the visibility and reach of sports, combined with governmental expertise and dedicated funding, Montenegro is setting a course for a cleaner, more sustainable future, tackling the ubiquitous problem of plastic waste head-on. It’s a match where the real win is for the planet.
