Despite the Stars facing elimination, it was the Oilers who showed greater urgency from the start. Edmonton quickly took control with a power play goal from veteran Corey Perry just 2:31 into the game. Shortly after Perry opened the scoring, Mattias Janmark extended the lead with a breakaway goal, capitalizing on a poorly timed line change by Dallas.
This second goal, coming on only the second shot for Edmonton, prompted Dallas coach Pete DeBoer to replace goaltender Jake Oettinger. Casey Smith entered the net for the Stars but soon allowed Jeff Skinner`s first career playoff goal, giving the Oilers a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening period.
Dallas mounted a brief comeback, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. However, Connor McDavid then delivered a highlight-reel play. A blocked shot exited the Oilers` zone, and McDavid, using his incredible speed, outraced Roope Hintz to the puck, then deked around DeSmith for a crucial breakaway goal.
McDavid finished the decisive Game 5 with a goal and an assist, showcasing his elite performance. His teammate, Leon Draisaitl, also contributed significantly with two assists.
Furthermore, Corey Perry`s opening goal was his seventh of the playoffs, establishing a new record for the most goals scored by a player aged 39 or older in a single postseason. Perry`s veteran presence around the net has provided essential secondary scoring for the Oilers.
Having advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers face a familiar and formidable opponent: the Florida Panthers. The Panthers convincingly defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final and aim to secure consecutive championships. This rematch sets the stage for a compelling battle.
