The second round of the NHL playoffs began on Tuesday night with two new series kicking off. The Carolina Hurricanes secured a significant road victory against the Washington Capitals in overtime, while the Edmonton Oilers rallied to win Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
In the initial matchup, Carolina dominated possession, constantly testing Capitals goalie Logan Thompson with numerous shots. Although prime scoring opportunities were limited, the Hurricanes maintained strong territorial control. Nevertheless, Washington took a 1-0 lead into the third period on a goal by Aliaksei Protas.
Halfway through the final period, Logan Stankoven finally equalized for Carolina. The game remained tied through regulation until Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin sealed the 2-1 win in overtime with a shot that found its way under Thompson`s pad through traffic.
This crucial play highlighted Slavin`s performance as one of the top players of the night across the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Across the country in Las Vegas, the Golden Knights quickly established a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to two goals from captain Mark Stone. Just as it seemed Vegas might take control, Edmonton responded, spearheaded by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. This duo contributed four points across Edmonton`s next two goals, setting the stage for Zach Hyman to net the winning goal with only minutes left on the clock.
With the Golden Knights pressing for an equalizer, Connor Brown added an insurance goal with a spectacular solo effort, securing the 4-2 win and a 1-0 series advantage for the Oilers.
Playoff action continues Wednesday night. The Florida Panthers will aim to level their series against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 2, while the Winnipeg Jets will host the Dallas Stars to start their Central Division series.
