No Criminal Charges in Adam Johnson Death Investigation

British prosecutors have decided not to file criminal charges against the player who was arrested in connection with the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the case against Matt Petgrave would not proceed, as reported by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Adam Johnson tragically died on October 28, 2023, after sustaining a severe neck injury from a skate blade during an on-ice collision. The incident occurred during a game between the Nottingham Panthers, Johnson`s team, and the Sheffield Steelers. Matt Petgrave was arrested two weeks after the fatal accident.

After an extensive investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) concluded that charges would not be pursued. During the investigation period, Petgrave received some financial aid for his legal costs through crowdfunding. Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn issued a statement explaining the decision.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn stated: “The CPS and South Yorkshire Police collaborated closely to assess whether criminal charges were appropriate against the other player involved. After a detailed police inquiry and a thorough review of all evidence by the CPS, we`ve determined there isn`t a realistic chance of a criminal conviction. Therefore, a prosecution will not occur. Our sympathies are still with Adam Johnson`s family and friends.”

Adam Johnson was 29 years old when he died. He previously played several seasons within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, competing in both the NHL and AHL. He appeared in 13 NHL games, recording one goal and three assists.
