As the global governing body for chess, FIDE treats the issue of fair play – in both over-the-board and online competitions – with utmost seriousness. This is particularly important given the widespread growth and influence of online platforms on the game`s development worldwide.
Regarding this, the methods publicly suggested by Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik warrant careful review and assessment for their practical application. FIDE intends to form a dedicated task force to evaluate these methods and invites GM Kramnik to present the specifics of his approach and supporting statistical data for an official FIDE evaluation.
At the same time, we are deeply concerned that the manner in which Mr. Kramnik is presenting his arguments is causing significant harm to the chess community. Mr. Kramnik must understand that his comments are not merely opinions or questions; they constitute a clear narrative, which, coming from a former World Champion, could severely damage the careers and overall well-being of certain players.
The current discussion has had a notable impact on a respected member of the chess community, Grandmaster David Navara, and has now resulted in a defamation lawsuit filed by GM Kramnik against GM Navara.
We wish to reiterate that throughout his chess career, GM Navara has established an unquestionable reputation as a model of fair play. The chess community is well aware that David is a person of great sensitivity and integrity, particularly vulnerable to any implication of unfair play.
Without delving into legal or stylistic interpretations of the statements made, we believe that, above all, mutual respect and empathy among colleagues should take precedence. We are firmly convinced that the lawsuit against GM Navara should be withdrawn as soon as possible for the benefit of the entire chess community. We sincerely hope that GM Kramnik will take this morally justified step, which we believe will be welcomed by the wider chess world.
