Brad Marchand delivered a standout performance, propelling the Florida Panthers to a crucial 5-4 double-overtime victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. Marchand scored two goals in the contest, leveling the series at one game apiece as the teams prepare to head back to South Florida.
The game started with rapid and intense scoring, as the two teams combined for five goals in the opening period alone. This marked the highest-scoring first period seen in the Stanley Cup Final since 2016, when the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks also managed to score five goals in the initial frame.
Marchand`s goals were made possible through collaborative efforts, particularly with teammate Anton Lundell. The winning goal, scored at the 8:04 mark of the second overtime period, saw Lundell smartly chip the puck forward to Marchand, who then skillfully directed it past Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner off his pad.
This game-winner served as a form of redemption for Marchand, who had a significant opportunity to end the game earlier in the first overtime. Receiving a pass from Carter Verhaeghe, Marchand had chances to score from close range against Skinner, but a subsequent rebound attempt unfortunately struck the goal post, extending the tense matchup.
Florida`s goaltender, Sergei Bobrovsky, faced a challenging start, conceding three goals in the first period. However, he subsequently found his rhythm, finishing the game with an impressive 41 saves on 45 shots and allowing only one goal throughout the remaining three-plus periods of play.
