Last week an Oklahoma restaurant called the I Don’t Care Bar and Grill was plagued by 12 employees who refused to show up for work in order to celebrate “A Day Without Immigrants.”
The owner, Bill McNally, fired them, according to KTUL, by sending them text messages reading,
You and your family are fired…I hope you enjoyed your day off, and you can enjoy many more. Love you.
But McNally added that his restaurant has a “Zero tolerance policy for no show/no call incidents and the 12 employees violated that policy.”
McNally’s actions prompted fury on social media, as seen in some one-star reviews quoted below from Yelp:
1. A family of employees chose to stand up for themselves for ONE day, and this shithole used it as an excuse to fire them after many YEARS of loyal servitude. It's petty, ignorant, harmful and should not be rewarded. Please take your hard earned dollars somewhere else; I know I will.
2. You don't have to share your employees views. But if you choose punish those individuals for having those views, not value the right to protest which is at the core of the first amendment, and use your business/power as a means to make a political statement, don't be surprised at the backlash you receive.
3. 1st: "You" Hire illegal immigrants to save money on low wages that nobody else will work for. 2nd: you fire them for standing up for what they feel and most of the world is correct "a day without immigrants.” 3rd: you are a cold individual and have no empathy or respect for human rights. 4th: The only legal people in this country of the United States of America are the native American Indians who their land was taken from. 5th and lastly: because you hired illegal immigrants and you fired illegal immigrants now you will face legal lawsuits for hiring illegal immigrants to begin with...
And from someone who really knew the restaurant when giving the one-star review:
I too have never been here; however, any business who would fire someone standing up for their civil rights is a place I would never want to support.
