Death Threats and Declining Attendance at Tolerant, Inclusive Mosque in Berlin
Turkish-German activist Seyran Ateş is a “moderate” Muslim and an advocate for women’s rights who opened a mosque inside an evangelical church in Berlin. Her mosque is an “inclusive” one, where women may pray alongside men, and may enter unveiled.
At this point it doesn’t seem to matter whether Ms. Ateş’ initiative is in earnest, or is in fact an example of Islamic taqiyya: not only is she experiencing an increasing number of death threats, but attendance at her mosque is declining, because the threats from “extremists” make her congregants feel unsafe. It’s only a matter of time before the insurer of the church building reads the actuarial handwriting on the wall and pulls the plug on her project.
