As the Stanley Cup Playoffs progress, the National Hockey League continues to unveil the finalists for its significant awards for the 2024-25 season.
During the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery event, the league revealed the three finalists vying for the Calder Trophy, presented to the league`s top rookie. The players nominated are Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks, Lane Hutson from the Montreal Canadiens, and Dustin Wolf of the Calgary Flames.
Lane Hutson`s offensive output was particularly noteworthy, as he became only the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all first-year players in scoring, accumulating 66 points. He joins a prestigious list including Bobby Orr (41), Brian Leetch (71), and Quinn Hughes (53) to achieve this feat. His 60 assists matched Larry Murphy`s rookie defenseman record set with the Kings in 1980-81. Should Hutson win the Calder Trophy, he would be the third Canadiens player recognized with the award in the expansion era (since 1967-68), following Brendan Gallagher (2012-13) and Ken Dryden (1971-72).
Recently, the league also announced a major award winner: Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov claimed his second consecutive Selke Trophy. This is Barkov`s third Selke award overall. He was recognized as the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game, beating out fellow Florida-based finalists Anthony Cirelli and Sam Reinhart. Barkov had another outstanding two-way season, highlighted by a plus-13 goal differential at five-on-five while frequently facing top opponents. He also contributed significantly offensively with 71 points. His defensive prowess helped the Panthers rank seventh in the NHL in goals-against per game (2.72) and tenth in penalty killing efficiency (80.7%). Barkov`s sustained elite play suggests his dominance in the defensive forward category is likely to continue.
The remaining NHL Awards will be announced daily leading up to mid-May. The official 2025 NHL Awards ceremony is scheduled for June 2025, though a specific date has not yet been finalized.
