While Muhammad defeated Leon Edwards for the title, Della Maddalena was originally scheduled to fight Edwards earlier this year before the bout was canceled.
Commenting on receiving the call for the title fight, Della Maddalena said:
“It was the dream call to get the call to fight for the belt… I was looking forward to the fight with Leon… but to get the call to fight the current champion, it was a dream come true. We know we have our work cut out for us, but we feel like we’ve been preparing for this day for a long time.”
Muhammad`s Hunger Remains
Despite becoming welterweight champion by defeating Leon Edwards last July, Belal Muhammad states he is not satisfied and maintains a “hunter” mentality.
He expressed his mindset:
“My mentality is still to be the hunter, I still want to be that guy, I still want to have that chip on my shoulder. Winning a belt, it didn’t satisfy me. For me, it’s like, ‘What’s the next project? What’s the next goal? What’s the next target?’… It took me forever to get to this spot and I’ve got to have that same mentality that I had when I fought Leon.”
