UFC fans are calling on Dana White to strip Jon Jones of his heavyweight championship belt. This follows Tom Aspinall setting an unwanted record.
A significant fight to unify the undisputed and interim heavyweight titles has not materialized yet, despite discussions ongoing since November.
Aspinall, aged 32, secured the interim UFC heavyweight title in November 2023 by delivering a quick 69-second knockout victory over Sergei Pavlovich. This came after Jon Jones sustained a pectoral muscle injury.
This week, the fighter from Wigan achieved a notable, albeit undesirable, milestone by becoming the longest-holding interim champion in UFC history. He surpassed the previous record of 534 days held by Renan Barao as the interim men`s bantamweight champion.
Consequently, numerous MMA fans have urged UFC CEO Dana White to take the title away from Jones and recognize Aspinall as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
On social media platform X, one fan wrote, “Strip Jon Jones.”
Another commented, “Take the belt away from Jon Jones!!! The guy is not the heavyweight champ.”
A third fan stated, “Jon Jones has become a detriment to the sport in his later years.”
One comment read, “This is embarrassing, get your act together, Dana White.”
Another fan added, “It`s disgusting how Tom Aspinall was robbed of an undisputed heavyweight title reign.”
These calls for White to strip Jones of his title emerged just days after the experienced promoter confirmed that the proposed fight between the former pound-for-pound king and Aspinall is still planned.
Commenting on recent rumors that the fight was “agreed,” White dismissed them last weekend by saying, “Everything you hear is BS until we say it.”
He reaffirmed, “I’ve said it many times, that’s the fight we want to make this year, [I`m] still super confident [it happens].”
White also reiterated his long-held belief: “I`ve said since Day One that this would be the biggest heavyweight fight in the history of the company and the history of the sport. This will be a big one.”
Jon Jones, formerly the dominant light-heavyweight champion, has not competed since his spectacular spinning back kick finish against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November.
Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall has been sidelined since his swift victory, defeating Curtis Blaydes in merely 60 seconds during their rematch at UFC 304 last July.
