As Alex Ovechkin gets closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record, everyone in the hockey world is watching. Wayne Gretzky himself will be among those watching closely, planning to travel to games as Ovechkin gets closer to this historic milestone.
After scoring his 887th career goal against the San Jose Sharks last weekend, Ovechkin needs just eight more goals in the remaining 14 games of the season to surpass Gretzky. While it’s not guaranteed, Ovechkin has the ability to go on a scoring streak before April 17.
As Ovechkin approaches Gretzky’s record on the all-time goals list, ‘The Great One’ will ensure he is present to witness the chase in person. Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman intend to travel from game to game when Ovechkin is on the verge of making history.
‘Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit of the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record is a significant event not only for hockey but for the entire sports world,’ said Jon Weinstein, the NHL’s chief communications officer. ‘We are excited to celebrate this historic chase in a way that reflects the enormity of this incredible moment.’
Ovechkin needs to pick up his scoring pace if he wants to catch Gretzky this season, especially after not scoring in the Capitals’ 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
However, all it takes for Ovechkin to get within striking distance is one big game, something he is known for. Ovechkin has 32 career hat tricks, and a 33rd would significantly close the gap to Gretzky.
Ovechkin will continue his pursuit of the record when the Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.
